"Mesmerizer" (メズマライザー) is a 2024 song written by Japanese music producer Satsuki, with Vocaloid virtual singer Hatsune Miku and Synthesizer V [ja] Kasane Teto as vocals. The music video for the song, created by Japanese animator "channel" reached 10 million views on YouTube within two weeks of its release, unprecedented for Vocaloid songs.[2][3]

Release and Reception[edit]

The music video for "Mesmerizer" was released on 27 April 2024, and the song released on streaming on 17 May.[4] The song was included on Satsuki's first album Circus's Detail, which was released on Niconico Chokaigi [ja] 2024.[2][5]

The song is on the theme of "mesmerism".[5] The lyrics described it as a kind of mesmerizing thing that can make people escape from reality, and described the mood and condition of people who rely on this.[4]

The song had over 10 million views on YouTube by 11 May.[4] The song is also the third and fastest song to surpass one million views on Niconico utilizing Synthesizer V [ja],[5] and the second fastest among all Vocaloid songs.[6]

Music video[edit]

The music video for the song was created by "channel", who had made a fan-made animation for DECO*27's song "Rabbit Hole", which went viral on social media.[4] In the music video, Hatsune Miku and Kasane Teto wear American diner style clothing. The two dance accompanied by the song's cheerful singing and rhythmic effects.[7] Despite the song's upbeat style, the video is littered with disturbing details, such as Teto saying "help" in sign language and showing the Signal for Help. Through the course of the video, Miku gradually loses her sanity and goes mad. Despite being frightened by Miku's condition, Teto continues to dance, her expression fatigued and gloomy.[4][5] The subtitles also turn into mojibake.[7] The video ends with Teto blinking and seeming to be smiling amidst a shower of confetti, implying that Teto also loses her sanity.[1]

Chart performance[edit]

The song debuted at number eight on the Billboard Japan Niconico VOCALOID SONGS TOP20 chart for the week,[8] later topping the chart for four consecutive weeks, and entering the top 20 of "Japan Songs (South Korea)" for three consecutive weeks. It also debuted at 65 on the Japan Hot 100 on May 29, 2024.[9] On May 30, 2024, the song ranked at 13 on the Billboard Global Japan Songs excl. Japan chart.[10] Besides, the song has a peak ranking of third on the Heatseekers Songs chart.[11]

It ranked second on the Japan Daily Top Music Videos chart by YouTube on May 13, 2024.[5] On May 22, 2024, it debuted at number five on the YouTube Japan Weekly Top Songs chart.[12] Besides, the word "Mesmerizer" debuted top on Nico Nico Pedia [ja] Weekly Hot Chart on May 8, 2024.[13]
